5 Tips for Staying Motivated and Staying Healthy should help with the adjustment after the Lockdown. Lockdown has been trying on many levels and you may find yourself losing interest in making the effort to exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet and look after your mental health? Maybe you manage to stick to your self-improvement and self-care goals for a few weeks and then your determination quickly fades, and you find yourself slipping back into the bad, old habits you intended to ditch.
If so, you are far from alone. There is light at the end of the tunnel though. What if instead of trying to make huge changes and taking an all-or-nothing approach to these efforts you set goals to make just a few changes at a time? Studies show that the lifestyle and health changes that have the best chance of lasting are the ones that call for minor, doable changes.
Here are five ideas to get you started.
5 Tips for Staying Motivated and Staying Healthy
Feel Good About Yourself – Starting Today
Be sure the people around you make you feel good about you — no matter what your size or health condition. If close friends encourage you to smoke, overeat, or drink too much, find some new friends who have good health habits and also want a healthier you.
By the same token, don’t get too sidetracked by the size of your clothes or the number of reps you can manage at the gym right now. Instead, focus on being healthy from the inside out. Eat well, and exercise regularly. And remember that you can be healthy and attractive without being rail thin.
Rethink Your Role Models
People have always often chosen unrealistic role models in terms of body image, but social media – especially Instagram – has only served to make doing so even more likely. But while its entertaining to see what (probably Photoshopped) images your favorite supermodels and muscle-bound actors post most people don’t look like that (and neither do they really.)
To help boost your motivation to stay healthy choose role models that help you feel good about who you are, rather than ones who make you feel bad. Or, perhaps better still, be your own role model and don’t try to conform to anyone’s standards.
Know What Makes You Overeat
Is overeating a problem for you? The key to staying motivated to eat healthier is to know where your problem areas are and have a plan for dealing with them. Do you use food to cope with disappointment, rejection, boredom, or even personal success?
Once you have identified these overeating triggers come up with healthier ways to combat them without food. To help you in those efforts set yourself up for success by keeping your kitchen stocked with lots of healthy eating options such like chunks of fruits and veggies, low-fat yogurts, flavored waters, and even sugar-free gum.
Make Simple Daily Change
Who said health-related lifestyle changes had to be all or nothing? Start small and make a few simple changes each day. These small changes can add up over time to give you a big health boost. Here are some suggestions:
- Add 5 more grams of fiber to your daily meal plan.
- Cut out one refined carbohydrate (white bread, white rice, sticky sweets)
- Add two more servings of veggies at lunch and dinner
- Drink three more glasses of water each day
- Add 10 minutes of walking to your daily exercise plans
- Take a break every hour at work and walk 500 steps in place (2,000 steps burns 100 calories)
- Wake up 15 minutes earlier and walk before work
Assemble a Cheering Section
We all need a cheering section — having to account to someone else gives you a reason to hang in there when you can’t muster determination from within. It doesn’t matter where the support comes from — a spouse, friend, co-worker, or online “buddy,” or others.
Think of five people who might be in your cheering section. Talk to these people about giving you support and holding you accountable as you work to get healthier. Call on them when you’re having trouble sticking with good habits. And when you do reach goals, invite them to celebrate with you.
These 5 Tips for Staying Motivated and Staying Healthy should get on the road to achieving your goals, we wish you health and happiness.
